Industry is a Lifestyle

The industry is an interesting place to work. It’s necessity of fine-tuned execution and line up of back up plan after back up plan is an art form. The ability to persuade soiled individuals into being herded like cattle is an obscene skill. It takes time to learn, and it takes one hell of a lot of patience from some persistent little fucks to manage. Day after day, I ask myself and observe amongst other colleagues to try to understand just how we do it.
And to be honest, I still don’t have one fucking clue how we do.
This world is like no other. You walk in, cheerful (hopefully) with the thought that you’re going to make some good cash for the night. Many that haven’t had their taste of this world couldn’t fathom the idea of why we intoxicate ourselves to the point of inebriation to cope with each day solely because they simply don’t understand just how much having so many humans take so much from you day in and day out, working shift work, late nights and early mornings, giving up weekends or combined days off to assure that you make enough money for rent. Giving away your soul for the sake of stranger’s enjoying their Friday night out. Singing your heart out to the point of embarrassment to appease the 30 year old mother for her son’s first birthday that he’ll never remember, wearing people’s used ketchup on your attire, beer soaked hair that you just had bleached for $300 that morning because your table insisted they can handle “one more”.
It’s a fucked up world we live in. The things that we do for the extra 5%. And we live for it
Not only do we need it to live, we LOVE to do it. Kind of like how an escort claims that she loves to keep her client’s company. We spend our entire twenties giving and giving to those that share no thanks, to those that expect this from us.
And yet somehow being treated like a servant is what makes us feel so good about ourselves.
We are THRILLED if we can get a thank you or a positive review online. We are GRATEFUL for those that give us that extra tip if we went above and beyond. We are THANKFUL when we are scheduled to work all weekend into the early morning.

This industry is not for the weak of mind, it is not for those that want to get their full 8 hours of sleep without sleeping past noon. It is for those individuals that love people as much as we say we hate them, the same people that are thrilled to spend the entire evening with your team and still go out to drink with them afterwards. It is for the people that make your coworkers family every single holiday that you spend with them. It is for the ones that are die hard industry, and to understand just what that means, well, you might have to sink yourself into this hell hole of hard work and people skills to figure it out.
